ICONIC trainers made in Bolton sported by celebrity figures including Maxine Peake and Mani from The Stone Roses will be showcased on national TV tonight as the firm behind the brand reveals the secrets of its success.

Norman Walsh footwear will feature on this week’s Made in Britain, an award-winning show celebrating British manufacturing.

TV cameras go behind the scenes to reveal how the firm’s iconic trainers are made.

Jon Crompton from the company said: “It is great to be showcased on national TV.

“We are proud to be the last British trainer manufacturer, sticking to our heritage of being manufactured in Bolton.

“It’s a great feeling to be able to represent our town by continuing our work here.”

His colleague Peter Woodhall added: “We stick to our traditional methods at Walsh and it was great to be able to show this through the TV programme.

“We apply a great amount of detail, care and effort into our hand-crafted work, so it’s nice that our customers can see that.”

Norman Walsh, which has been making trainers since 1961 for Olympians, FA Cup winners and cricketers, has recently collaborated with Fortnum & Mason for its Autumn/Winter range.

The company says that its retro range of trainers popular in the 1960s and 1970s are making a comeback.

Made in Britain, narrated by actor and comedian Ricky Tomlinson, will show how the iconic trainers are made and why they are still so popular today.

The brand’s success story goes back to 1945 when 14 year-old Norman Walsh left school and followed his father into the footwear business.

He served his apprenticeship with the Bolton-based Foster Brothers’ footwear company where he became a master craftsman.

Mr Foster was the grandfather of Joe and Jeff Foster who both went on to found the famous Reebok brand.

In 1948, Norman made all the shoes worn by the British Olympic team, triggering interest in his work from around the world and he began making footwear for top international athletes.

As well as top athletes, Bolton actor Maxine Peake has been spotted wearing the iconic training shoe as well as The Vamps, Mani from Stone Roses and Tony McCarrol from Oasis.

Mr Walsh died in 2014 at the age of 82.

Made in Britain is on tonight at 8pm on ITV4.
