GRITTERS are set to hit the streets today as the cold weather is set to strike again.

Road surface temperatures in Blackburn and Darwen are set to be below freezing tonight between 5pm and 9pm.

A Blackburn with Darwen Council spokesman said: "It was a cold one last night.

As per yesterday, temperatures were colder than forecast, with roads dropping to their lowest at 4am with temperatures of -4.7C.

"Temperatures are a lot milder tonight and will move into the positives over the next few days."

Gritting is set to start at 6pm.

The council spokesman said "Today there will be spells of sunshine, hazy at times.

"Road surface temperatures dropping close to or below zero into early evening under thin or broken cloud.

"Some hoar frost possible.

"Through the evening, the breeze picks up further and there will be some increase in cloud, but uncertainty in the extent.

"Further clear periods likely towards the end of the night with a dip towards near zero Road surface temperatures again locally.

"Dry for many tomorrow morning."
