A DRINK driver who crashed into a parked car in the early hours of the morning was still trapped in his car when police arrived on the scene.

Blackburn magistrates heard that after he had been freed from his vehicle Gary Hilton agreed to provide a roadside breathalyser.

And when he was taken to hospital for treatment he also agreed to give a blood sample.

Hilton, 49, of Cranbrook Street, Blackburn, pleaded guilty to driving with excess alcohol. He was fined £120 with £85 costs and £32 victim surcharge and banned from driving for 18 months.

Catherine Allan, prosecuting, said police were called to a serious injury accident in Grafton Street at 1.40 am. The car was on its side and Hilton was still inside.

After he was removed paramedics passed him fit to provide a breath sample before taking him to hospital.

Damien Pickup, defending, said his client was injured and needed hospital treatment but was grateful that nobody else had been injured.

"Despite his injuries he co-operated with the police at the roadside and at hospital and deserves full credit for that," said Mr Pickup.
