A charity that is trying to raise funds so they can restore a town's iconic landmark are to benefit from the Co-Op Local Community Fund.

Darwen Rotary will benefit from purchases made by Co-op customers and members when they buy selected products or services, with any money raised going towards the restoration of Darwen Tower.

A five percent reward will be given to each Co-op member when they buy one of the products and a further one percent will go to local causes, such as the Darwen Rotary Trust Fund.

John Jacklin from the Darwen Rotary said: "At a time when funds for community groups and charitable organisations are becoming more difficult to access we are incredibly grateful for this opportunity to make a real difference in Darwen

"We are raising funds to help with the restoration of Darwen Jubilee Tower.

"The Tower, after over 120 years of exposure to the elements, is showing signs of extreme wear and tear and it needs some care and attention.

"The Darwen Rotary is trying to raise £100,000 to contribute to the cost of the work and to date has reached £68,500.

"The Tower is an iconic feature of the town both as a memorial of Queen Victoria’s Jubilee and a landmark declaration of the freedom of the moors for everyone.

"To help us raise vital funds we are hoping that Co-op members will help by purchasing selected products or services from the Co-op when they will earn a five per cent reward for themselves and a further one per cent for local causes such as ours."
