Fire crews and the hazardous material unit were called on Monday night after the fuel tank on an HGV burst, spilling diesel onto the road and closing a motorway service station.
One fire engine from Chorley and the HAZMAT unit from Burnley attended the incident at around 9.30pm on the M6 northbound at Charnock Richard Services slip road.
A spokesperson for the fire service said: "A fuel tank on a heavy goods vehicle had ruptured, causing spillage of a large quantity of diesel.
"The slip road and the services were closed while we worked with Highways England and the Environment Agency.
"Firefighters used an environmental protection kit with putty mats, absorbent pads and a peristaltic pump to remove the fuel."
The services and slip road northbound were closed from 10.45pm until 5am on Tuesday.
