A BONFIRE night hit squad is getting ready to crack down on illegal fires across the borough.

Social enterprise Newground has teamed up with Blackburn with Darwen Council to ensure that any unauthorised bonfires are safely dismantled and removed.

The self-proclaimed hit squad is urging residents to report any concerns about any bonfire or build up of waste that could be set alight, to the council.

This will allow the council to take steps to remove the hazard if on council land or pass the details on to the fire service.

Director of landscapes and estate services at Newground Steve Greenwood said: “This initiative to remove unauthorised bonfires is a great example of how we work with partners to tackle anti-social behaviour and keep our communities safe.

“By choosing to attend only well organised, official events you can enjoy the bonfires and fireworks while keeping people, property and vital resources safe.”

Contracts, policy and performance officer at Blackburn with Darwen Council James Rawlings said: “Working together with various organisations and authorities, we aim to reduce the risk of harm to the public and property by removing unmanaged illegal bonfires.”

Anyone with concerns over bonfires is asked to call 01254 585921.
