TWO men have been arrested after a man died when he was hit by a car in Accrington.


Police were called at just after 5pm yesterday (Saturday, November 2nd) to reports of a collision on Blackburn Road at the junction with Holland Street.


A Volkswagen Golf was travelling along Blackburn Road towards Church when it was involved in a collision with a man crossing the road.


The pedestrian, a 75-year-old man from Accrington, suffered serious injuries and died a short time later.


The occupants of the Golf, two men both aged 22 from Blackburn, were arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving. They remain in custody.


The road was closed for around four hours for accident investigation.


Inquiries into the collision are on-going and police are appealing for anyone who saw the collision or the Golf before, or who has any CCTV or dashcam footage to get in touch.


PC Michael Higginson said: “This collision has very sadly resulted in a man losing his life and my thoughts are with his loved ones at this time.

"I would appeal to anyone who saw the collision or who has any information which could assist our investigation to get in touch.”

A 35-year-old passer-by, who wished to remain anonymous, said: "I was sitting in my car and all I heard was a loud bang behind me. 

"I got out of the car and there were two people from a car dragging the man onto the pavement as he was on the road.

"The two people were in shock and they were trying to help the man. 

"They were trying to give him chest compressions and they were on loudspeaker on the phone with the ambulance services trying to help him.

"They were on the phone for about 15 minutes.

"The man must have been in his 70s."
