HUNDREDS of cars made the traditional Halloween trip from Clitheroe to Sabden to get a record number of witch hunters on Pendle Hill back in November 1979.

But not all the witches made the dash towards Pendle.

Three groups of broom-stick-bearing spooks held their audience spellbound in pubs around Blackburn and Darwen.

The witches were member of the Blackburn branch of Leukaemia Research, who raised funds for the association.

One group met at the Millstone, Darwen Circus, before touring the town while two other groups haunted the Little Harwood, Brownhill, and Lammack areas of Blackburn.

Meanwhile travellers through Belthorn could have been forgiven for thinking they had strayed near Pendle Hill as a mysterious line of witches, ghosts, ghouls and skeletons went through the streets.
