GARDENERS are being advised to make the most of their green bins being collected as they will be stopped in December.

Carole Taylor, Pendle Council's waste and recycling co-ordinator, has urged people to make sure their gardens are prepped for winter as the green bins will not be collected until March 2020.

She said: "Any gardeners who do have garden waste over the winter can find details on our website about home composting and taking garden waste to a household waste recycling centre."

Cllr Mohammed Iqbal, leader of Pendle Council, other local authorities, including Burnley, Blackburn with Darwen, Rossendale and Craven Councils do not provide garden waste services in the winter.

He said: "Very few people actually used the service between December and February.

“Even before we tried the opt-in system there was a drop in use of over 80 per cent over the winter.

"Pendle decided this is the sensible approach given that we need to make financial savings.

"There simply isn’t the demand."
