A police officer has been assaulted in an early morning fracas.

Officers were called to a disturbance on Walter Street in Brierfield at around 5.45am on Monday.

One of the attending officers, PC Burrow, arrived on scene and was met by a man who had a head wound and was bleeding from the back of his head.

A spokesperson for the police said: "He was advised we would request an ambulance for him to which he did not like, and began to throw punches at PC Burrow."

The man was subsequently detained by officers using reasonable force, and was arrested for police assault.

He was then taken to hospital to have his head injury treated.
