A KNOWN shoplifter was watched by security staff as she loaded up with £224 worth of goods before leaving Boots without paying.

Blackburn magistrates heard Samantha Angela Clarke was detained outside and admitted stealing because she was desperate for money.

Clarke, 45, of Exeter Street, Blackburn, pleaded guilty to theft from Boots. She was made subject to a community order for 12 months with a 12 months alcohol treatment requirement and ordered to pay £90 victim surcharge.

Catherine Fell, defending, said at the time of the offence in August her client's partner had been admitted to hospital with pneumonia and deep vein thrombosis and at one time it was thought he was going to die.

"She was under a great deal of emotional strain," said Miss Fell.

"She is currently receiving £190 universal credit every five weeks and the twice daily visits to the hospital were causing a financial strain.

"The probation service are suggesting an alcohol treatment order and she would welcome that."
