REVISED proposals to tackle problem parking outside a Blackburn school have been revealed.

Residents living near Queen Elizabeth's Grammar School in Blackburn had objected to proposals aimed to tackle problem parking around the school.

Earlier this year, Blackburn with Darwen Council unveiled a scheme aimed at improving road safety and reducing congestion on West Park Road and Dukes Brow.

Under the scheme, cars would have been banned from waiting at any time on Burlington Street and West Park Road, while there will also be no loading or unloading on West Park Road at any time.

The same measures would have been put in place on Dukes Brow but limited to Monday to Friday between 8am and 5pm during school term time.

In recent years, there have been problems with parents accessing the school, double parking in Dukes Brow and West Park Road, while buses have also been struggling.

Dukes Brow residents objected to the scheme, which proposed to introduce school keep clear markings on the residential side of the road as well as the school side.

And revised proposals approved by executive member for growth and development, Cllr Phil Riley, show that Dukes Brow will now only have restrictions on the school side of the road.

Cllr Riley said: "Approval to advertise the proposal was given at the Executive Member Briefing and following advertising in June, four objections were received.

"These were reported to September’s meeting of the planning and highways committee where members supported officers’ recommendation to uphold the objections and remove the proposal for a school keep clear restriction on the residential side of Dukes Brow from the schedule."

Council highways officer Gina Lambert said: "The proposal to introduce a school keep clear restriction on the residential as well as the school side of Dukes Brow will reduce parking along this stretch of properties in an area where few have off street parking. "This will have a negative impact on residents and will adversely affect the elderly and those with mobility problems.

"Having carried out further site surveys and reviewed the proposed new restrictions, it is felt that keep clear markings on the school side of the road only, as with most schools in the borough, will be adequate to provide a safe environment for pupils as

they arrive at and leave the school."

Earlier this year, it was reported residents of Dukes Brow objected to the proposal to introduce school keep clear markings on the residential side of the road as well as the school side.

The objectors said that this restriction would result in elderly residents and visitors having to walk further as they would not be able to park near their homes.

Fears were raised by parents and grandparents concerned this will have an impact on young children’s safety as they will have to walk further from their parking place to the school.
