A WINE shop has been named among the best in the world by a renowned industry magazine.

The Whalley Wine Shop was named winner of the Decanter Award for Best Local Wine Shop.

Owner, Tom Jones from Ribchester, travelled to London to pick up the award, and revealed the family team was delighted.

Mr Jones said: “Decanter magazine is perhaps the world’s most famous wine magazine and the Decanter Awards are easily the most highly regarded in the UK.

“I have been reading Decanter since I was 18, it basically got me interested in wine in a serious way and to win one of their awards has always been an ambition, or more a dream as I never thought we would actually manage it.

“It is the pinnacle in our industry and I am so proud of the whole team.”

In praising The Whalley Wine Shop, judges said: “We loved the wine list, it’s a great selection, it’s really well priced and gives the customer an excellent choice.

“The shop and staff felt very approachable, it was also nice to see customers able to taste the wines in-store and good to see the online operation making progress.”

Mr Jones started the shop in 2010 in the old Threshers shop with the help of his parents and old boss.

He said: “In 2012 I took on two fantastic people to join the team, one is now our shop manager and the other is now my wife.

“Matt looks after the shop team and the day-to-day running of the shop and my wife Jen is amazing and looks after all our wholesale customers, organises the entire business behind the scenes and basically keeps me from doing some of the stupider plans I have.

“My mother runs our finances, my father our marketing, and my brother our design work.

"It’s truly a family business.”
