THE POWER of music will be used to help dementia sufferers across the county.

Blackburn-based Fine & Dandy will be taking its sing-a-longs and entertainment out to care homes and an Age UK day centre on September 25 and 26.

On September 26, the fifth BBC Music Day takes place on that day with events and broadcasts across the week.

And Fine & Dandy, an organisation which specialises in activities for older people living with dementia, is working with BBC Music Day 2019.

The theme this year is music and wellbeing; the power of music to inspire, to bring people together and make a positive impact.

For its music and dementia initiative, BBC Music Day 2019 is collaborating with more than 50 UK organisations involved with dementia care, reaching out through their networks to help bring music to everyone living with dementia.

Eric Haworth, events co-ordinator at Fine & Dandy, said: “We’re working collaboratively with BBC Music Day in their quest to help bring music to everyone in the UK with dementia by 2020, using the day as a platform.

“The theme this year is music and wellbeing, using the power of music to inspire and bring people together to make a positive impact.

"So I felt this was an ideal opportunity to participate and get involved."

Fine & Dandy delivers interactive memory workshops and sing-a-long music entertainment, bringing people with dementia together.

Its sessions are interactive, engaging and stimulating so the mind remembers and they act as a springboard to new thinking.

The organisation creates and deliver memory workshops for seniors to help stave off the onset of memory conditions such as dementia.

Mr Haworth added: “Our aim is to bring fun, focus and purpose to the day, so promoting a happier, healthier atmosphere for all to enjoy.

“Singing simple songs and has potential benefits for people living with dementia when combined with music.

“Our activities for older people living with dementia can also incorporate percussion, movement, discussion, quizzes and reminiscing.

“And in some of our venues we have incorporated fun foreign language activities, again bringing people with dementia together.”

The Fine & Dandy events will take place at Andrews Court Care Home, Springfield Cottage Care Home and Age UK Hopwood Court Day Centre, all in Blackburn.
