WITH TV audiences getting ready for the competitive rounds of Strictly Come Dancing, this photo from our archives is a timely reminder that in East Lancashire we’ve always loved to ‘keep dancing’.

Pictured back in 1975 are what the Telegraph called at the time ‘Blackburn’s rock and roll couple’ - Mike and Maureen Leaver from Intack.

They finished runners-up in the United Kingdom Disco Dance Championship held at Bailey’s nightspot in Liverpool.

For their efforts they were rewarded with gold medals and a £75 cash prize. They were beaten by a Bristol couple - brother and sister dancing duo James and Theresa Pearce.

As well as disco dancing, finals were also held for the go-go section which was won by Shirley Turner and Gary Sharp who were representing Bailey’s nightclub in Oldham.

The competition was sponsored by soft drink manufacturers Britvic Minster.
