A PROMISING student whose first year at university was tragically cut short after she was diagnosed with terminal brain tumours has shown amazing courage by realising her dream of going back on campus.

Laura Nuttall thought she had symptoms of ‘fresher’s flu’ after suffering with headaches during her first term at King’s College University in London in October 2018.

After being violently sick, the 19-year-old from Barrowford went to hospital and was diagnosed with two brain tumours, following a scan.

However less than 12 months on, her life has come full circle after she started at the University of Manchester studying philosophy, politics and economics.

Proud mum Nicola said: “We were told when Laura was diagnosed that she wouldn’t be returning to university so we’re all really happy that she has the opportunity and really glad that it’s Manchester rather than London.

“Medically she’s doing okay, she’s still got five more months of chemotherapy and immunotherapy in Cologne. She takes a large number of supplements every day too. Life really has turned full circle and we’re back where we were last year.”

Laura is now an ambassador for the Brain Tumour Charity and has distributed more than 2,500 headsmart cards to help with the early detection of brain tumours.

She has hit the headlines with her bucket list – which has seen her do some amazing things and visit special places since her diagnosis.

Nicola said: “She organised a team at Manchester Pride, the Twilight Walk and she’s very keen to promote the work of the charity. She’s organising a Twilight Walk for the Brain Tumour Charity on October 26 setting off in Alkincoats Park, Colne. She’s hoping to raise £3,500 to cover two weeks of research into kinder and more effective treatments.

“We also spent the last 10 months ticking things off her bucket list and she’s met Michelle Obama, gone on safari in South Africa and gone fishing with Paul Whitehouse and Bob Mortimer.”
