POLICE helicopters carried out searches in Darwen to try to catch three men after a chase.

The incident took place at 11.30pm on Wednesday night when officers say the occupants of a vehicle were acting suspiciously when they were spotted at Junction 3 of the M65.

A Lancashire Police spokesman said: "The officer followed the Fiat Punto on to the M65 westbound and it failed to stop, leaving the motorway at junction 4 before heading to Darwen.

"The car eventually travelled into a dead end with three men who were inside running off on Ellison Fold Way and in the general direction of Sudell Road.

"Officers searched the area but unfortunately no-one has been arrested.

"Enquiries are on-going."

Cllr Roy Davies, who represents the Darwen East ward, said: "I was awoken this morning when the police helicopter came flying over our house on Olive Lane at 1.15am.

"I have been told that a high speed pursuit took place and I understand that the police cornered a car on Ellison Fold Way.

“They turned right to go down what they thought was a road which was a parking bay.

They tried to get down the dirt track and cut up all the grass and you can see the tyre marks on the grass.  I heard that the passengers in the car escaped.

"There was some damage to a fence at the corner house when I walked past.”

One Suddell Close resident, who did not wish to be named said: “I heard the helicopter at 1am and was very low in the sky.

”I did not know what it was about  and all I saw was the flashing beam light in the sky.

”I think it was overhead rhenden circled and went towards the town centre and then came back again.”
