The Grasmere Sports is returning this weekend and it is promised to be an eventful one.

Celebrating its 169th anniversary the sporting event will be packed with a vast selection of activities and it is expected to attract thousands of visitors.

Heading the programme will be Cumberland and Westmorland wrestling, hound trails, fell running for both adults and children, the ever-popular dog show (which includes a dog-handler award for the first time), children’s sprint races, and Tom Longton’s sheepdog display.

Dangerous Steve, who juggles fire and chainsaws, will also return for a second year.

On Sunday there will be an array of trade stands, a beer tent and veteran car static display.

Show manager Deborah Black said: “Setting up for the 169th Grasmere Sports has been ongoing all week, and the field is looking great.

"With a settled forecast everyone at the Sports is looking forward to a bumper family day.  With loads of sports for everyone to take part in and a hugely popular Dog Show – we have something for all the family.  Just turn up and enter on the day.”

“With all the traditional elements of fell running, hound trails and Cumberland & Westmorland wrestling – we haven’t forgotten our roots, but have rather added to the mix with craft stalls, trade stands and main ring entertainment.”
