FROM the Archive this week features a photograph of a controversial carpet in Barry.
The Barry Urban District council offices at King Square officially opened on April 22, 1908.
This photograph of the interior of the council chamber was reproduced in the official programme for the opening ceremony.
In 1906 the council decided by way of a vote that they wanted carpet, and not linoleum, in the new chamber.
Cllr. Rev. Pandy John was tasked with its purchase and controversially shunned local Barry traders preferring Cardiff traders, stating the carpet samples in Cardiff were bigger than those in Barry.
A month after his purchase Cllr Rev. Pandy John stood again for election in Castleland ward and was "shown the carpet" by local trader John Marshall, a Holton Road butcher, who had a resounding victory.
