A TEENAGE driver led police on a high-speed chase around Accrington in the early hours of the morning.

Blackburn magistrates heard Kye Hayman attracted the attention of officers because of the speed he was driving at.

During the 10-minute pursuit that followed he reached speeds of over 70mph before being stopped by a stinger and crashing at the junction of Willows Lane and Blackburn Road.

Hayman, 19, of Charter Street, Accrington, pleaded guilty to dangerous driving, driving without insurance and other than in accordance with a licence On July 18. He was committed on bail to Burnley Crown Court to be sentenced on September 23 and made subject to an interim disqualification.

Tracy Yates, prosecuting, said having received a report of a car being driven at speed at 4am officers first spotted Hayman in Mount Street. There was a chase around the streets of Accrington with Hayman doing over 70mph in 30 mph zones.

"During the pursuit he collided with a liveried police car causing injury to an officer," said Mrs Yates.

"There was a passenger in the car which is an aggravating feature."

Ben Leach, defending, said his client accepted the case would go to the crown court.
