Fire crews were called to a reservoir following reports that an elderly man had become stuck in some mud.
Crews from Blackburn attended Dean Clough Reservoir near Langho at around 6.20pm, after passers-by reported that they had seen a gentleman in trouble in the marsh land.
A spokesperson for the fire service said: "The gentleman, who we believe to be in his eighties, had been walking round the reservoir and had managed somehow to get himself stuck in the marsh land and was unable to get himself out.
"He was around half a mile away from the road and had begun sinking into the marsh.
"A passer by had managed to get him out and to safety."
The ambulance was also called and the gentleman was checked over at the roadside.
The spokesperson confirmed that the man, although a little shocked, was in good spirits and did not need to attend hospital.
