A MAN who went on a "bender", after being told he was going to be recalled on prison licence, broke into an Accrington café and stole the tips jar.
Blackburn magistrates heard Matthew Weller was seen by members of the public kicking in a glass door panel at Sue's Place on Blackburn Road at 7am on Saturday, August 3.
Weller, 38, of Burnley Road, Accrington, pleaded guilty to burglary.
He was sentenced to 10 weeks in prison and ordered to pay £100 compensation on release.
Parveen Akhtar, prosecuting, said Weller was detained nearby and the loose change from the tips jar was still in his pocket.
Gareth Price, defending, took a realistic view of the position he was in because of his previous record and the fact the offence was committed while on prison licence.
"This was not a well planned or sophisticated offence," said Mr Price. "He learned last week he was being recalled on prison licence and went on a drinking binge."
