A LARGE waste fire has broken out in Colne.

Fire crews were called to the blaze in a private field near Southfield Lane at around 10.30pm on Monday.

The fire involved a quantity of waste, roughly 20metres by 20metres in size.

At its height, six fire crews were tackling the fire with firefighters using two main jets to battle the flames.

Residents living near to the fire were warned at around 1.30am to keep windows and doors closed if possible.

A spokesman for the Environment Agency, said: "We were on the scene with the fire services to assess the damage and offer guidance.

"We are looking into it further."

A police spokesman said: "We have been made aware of the fire and were on the scene assisting with road closures.

"It is possibly suspicious, and when the fire service are finished at the scene we will take over."

The incident had been scaled down by around 5.30am with three fire engines tackling the fire.
