TWO youths who burgled and set fire to a barn conversion and caused £130,000 worth of damage have walked free from court.

Burnley Youth Court heard how the 17-year-old youth from Rawtenstall and a 14-year-old boy from Baxenden targeted Old Hall Barn, Rawtenstall, last December after drinking and taking drugs at a party.

The pair, who had been partying with friends in a nearby camper van, stole wine and champagne from the property, which was in the final stages of renovation, before starting a blaze.

The 17-year-old was still so drunk the day after he went back and burgled the property again, the court was told.

Both youths admitted burglary and arson and the 17-year-old also pleaded guilty to a second burglary charge.

The 17-year-old was given a 12-month referral order whilst his co-defendant got an 11 month order. Both must pay £75 costs.

Carl Gaffney, prosecuting, said entry had been forced into the property. Wine and champagne had been taken. The 17-year-old had phoned the police and told them the barn was on fire. He was treated as a potential witness.

Alcohol similar to that stolen was found in a wheelie bin next to the camper van. A computer tower similar to one taken from the barn and an unopened bottle of champagne were in his bedroom.

Janet Sime, defending the 17-year-old, said his behaviour was totally and utterly out of character. He had been drinking to excess and taking cannabis.

For the 14-year-old, Emma Morrissey said he had been diagnosed with bi-polar syndrome and medics thought the community mental health team could work with him.
