EAST Lancashire has long been associated with the footwear industry.
A combination of a damp climate and skilled labour force meant for decades shoes. boots and slippers often bore the ‘made in East Lancashire’ stamp.
This picture taken in 1973 shows workers at Lambert Haworth in Burnley stitching the uppers on slippers before they were sent for vulcanising.
At one point, Lambert Haworth was Marks and Spencer’s largest shoe supplier. It had a factory in Rawtenstall and two mills in Burnley - Finsley Gate and Healey Royd, now part of the town’s Weavers Triangle development.
