A NEW safety project for a road branded a borough’s ‘most dangerous’ has finally been drawn up.

Lancashire County Council has prepared the improvement scheme for Blackburn Road in Oswaldtwistle after several accidents and complaints from residents about the risk from speeding vehicles.

It will improve safety measures particularly around its junction with Thwaites Road where a motorcyclist suffered leg injuries in an accident in May.

Oswaldtwistle’s county councillor Peter Britcliffe has been calling for safety improvements since January 2017.

After the accident, the Tory politician tackled Lancashire County Council highways boss Cllr Keith Iddon expressing disappointment at the delay in progress on the issue.

This week the county council’s area highways officer Jean Teunion wrote to Cllr Britcliffe to tell him: “The design work for the safety scheme on Blackburn Road is completed and the changes have now been through safety audit and the scope of the scheme adjusted.

“The total cost of the scheme is currently with our highways team for a check on the costs and assessment of the traffic management requirements for the scheme.

“The Traffic Regulation Orders will be sent to our legal team early next week for the advertisements to be drawn up. This will take two to four weeks and so the adverts should be ready to go on site towards the end of July.

Cllr Britcliffe branded the road as the ‘most dangerous in Hyndburn’ last year after obtaining official statistics showing that between 2013/14 and 2015/16 it had 63 accidents, the most in the borough.

He said: “Finally success. When the scheme is published, local residents and I will examine it carefully an see if tweaks are needed."
