An East Lancashire pub has been crowned best in the community by a prestigious travel guide.

The Eagle & Child was named Best Community Pub in the Sawday’s Pub Awards 2019, which specialises in finding special places to stay and eat at.

The establishment, in Whalley Road Ramsbottom, was chosen for being a beacon of community spirit, and will now feature in the first edition of Sawday's, The Great British Pub Guide.

Glen Duckett of the Eagle & Child said: “Our business is focussed on supporting regeneration through youth training and employment, so we were delighted to be awarded Sawday's Community Pub of 2019.

"The award acknowledges our social mission, as well as our high standards of hospitality and catering in such a reputable and long-standing travel guide."

The Great British Pub Guide is a first edition, lavish reboot of Sawday’s bestselling Pubs and Inns book which has sold over 140k copies.

On sale now, the book features over 500 of the best British pubs hand-selected by the Sawday’s inspection team.

The book features the winners of the annual Sawday’s Pub Awards, which have been run in partnership with The Telegraph to find the nation’s best-loved pubs.

Judges were impressed with The Eagle & Child's commitment to creating positive change by helping to tackle youth unemployment.

And by transforming former waste ground into a beer garden, Mr Duckett created what judges called 'a fabulous space for education, food production, drinking and dining'.
