A BUS driver and passengers had an amazing escape when the vehicle skidded on black ice in Queens Park Road, Blackburn, and ploughed into some garden walls.

The double decker crashed through the garden wall of No.137 and then into the garden of No.135.

Mr Lawton, who lived at No.135 when the crash happened in 1979, said: "I was sitting in the dining room and suddenly there was a tremendous crash.

"I thought it was a bomb.

"It was a miracle that nobody was injured but the driver was badly shaken."

It was understood that when the bus had begun to skid, it was heading for a shelter where people were waiting, so to avoid hitting anyone, the driver, Ian Cowperthwaite, deliberately swung on the wheel to take the bus across the road.
