Traffic on the M65 had to be held and diverted as police closed the motorway in both directions.
Officers received a concern for welfare call at around 12pm on Wednesday, and closed the motorway between junctions five and six near Blackburn.
Posting on Twitter at around 12.30pm, a police spokesperson said: "The M65 is currently closed in both directions between Junctions five and six near Blackburn while we deal with a police incident.
"Please be patient while we deal and thanks for your co-operation." The motorway was reopened in both directions around 1pm.
