CROWDS turned out for an unveiling ceremony to honour a famous scientist.

The picture from the Lancashire Telegraph's archives (June 20, 1903), shows the unveiling of The Mercer Memorial Clock Tower in Great Harwood.

John Mercer invented and gave his name to 'Mercerised' cotton - cloth given a silk-like sheen by the process which Mercer (1791-1866) discovered by accident while experimenting with caustic soda.

The clock memorial to him was erected on Great Harwood's Towngate by public subscription and unveiled by Alderman Thomas Broughton, the mayor of Accrington.
