THE nostalgia picture in the Lancashire Telegraph on May 17 has sparked happy memories for the Queen’s Scout serving hamburgers to Susan Ogden and Doreen Leach.

Andrew Medd, now 62 and living in Hoddlesden, wrote in to tell me: “Wow, I never thought I would appear in Bygones! I am the young 18 year old Queen Scout you pictured.

“I am very grateful that you cropped the bottom of the photo because if it is the one I think it is my hand is in a less than elegant pose!

“I can still remember the BBQ at the Venture Scout HQ at the kiosk on Manor Road.”

Since the picture was taken Mr Medd, who at the time lived in Westland Avenue in Darwen, has pursued a career in engineering, married Kath and had two children.

His hobbies include motoring and cycling, having built two kit cars and cycled from Land’s End to John O’Groats and round Holland with his wife.

Mr Medd recalls: “I remember spending many weekends helping renovate the kiosk, including replacing many of the small broken glass panes in the Georgian windows because I developed a skill for doing the putty really well.”

He and Kath will move to Ingleton in the near future.

His father, Peter Medd, was treasurer for the Venture Scouts for many years, passing away four years ago, at the age of 96.
