MORE than 20 GP practices across Pennine Lancashire are now accredited to offer student nurse placements.

Blackburn with Darwen Clinical Commissioning Group is supporting the Pennine Lancashire enhanced training practice programme, which provides coordination of learning and development opportunities for primary care.

Currently, 23 GP practices are accredited to offer placements for students, while the number of nurse mentors currently stands at 49 and the number of sign off nurse mentors is currently 16.

Quarterly education meetings were held in January and April 2019 for nurse mentors and their students to share best practice and as a result, a generic Pennine Lancashire student nurse handbook and workbook is being compiled.

Primary care senior support manager, Sarah Danson, said: "Workforce development and education is a crucial element in the progression of a new sustainable model of care for general practice; as such the CCG is committed to supporting the Primary Care workforce to work differently.

"By working closely with providers and offering appropriate development opportunities, Blackburn with Darwen intends to create a model of general practice where there is career progression for the entire workforce."
