TWO school blocks are to be knocked down as part of an extensive refurbishment.

Plans have been lodged with Hyndburn Council proposing to remodel Hyndburn Academy in Rishton, formerly Norden High School and Sports College.

It is proposed to demolish the old science block, as well as the Raising of School Leaving Age block, which is unused due to asbestos.

All classrooms will be refurbished, while science labs will be relocated to the main building first floor.

The main entrance to the academy will also be moved.

And the demolition area will be tarmacked over to be used as a staff car park.

A design and access statement submitted as part of the application reads: "The works within the central area of the main block form part of this application and include internal and external refurbishment works.

"These works will enhance the security of the site as well as offer a better sense of arrival through a new entrance and landscaped frontage.

"The existing car park is to be relocated to the rear of the site in order to segregate pedestrian and vehicular movement for safety purposes.

"The proposed layouts of the classroom block compliment the works to the central area of the main building and form a single phase of works for the academy.

"Notice for the removal of buildings will be submitted directly to Hyndburn Council.

"The staff and teaching areas within these buildings will be absorbed into the main building as part of the refurbishment works.

"This will allow the academy to run more efficiently and effectively."
