A MAN arrested following a robbery at a town centre post office in which staff were sprayed with an unknown substance has been released under investigation.

The 33-year-old man, who is from Accrington, was arrested over the weekend on suspicion of robbing the post office in Abbey Street in the town .

It came after police were called at around 5.30pm on Friday to a report that a man had gone into the post office and sprayed four people - three staff members and one bystander - with the unknown substance.

He demanded staff open the safe, before leaving with a quantity of cash. He escaped the scene on a bicycle.

As a result of the incident, the staff members and the bystander were taken to Royal Blackburn Hospital, with either facial or arm injuries. Police said they none of them were seriously hurt.

Police, the fire service's hazardous material specialists and paramedics all attended the scene.

Detectives are continuing to appeal for witnesses.
