THE Burnley fire brigade got its first purpose-built headquarters in Belvedere Road in 1965.

Here we can see firefighters stand proudly outside their new home accompanied by fire engines.

The former station in Manchester Road was not suitable for the more modern engines of the time as they only had one inch of clearance through the doors before heading out into the town's busiest main road.

Firefighters would use Thompson Park to practice using their hose reels as the park's lake provided an excellent source of water.

A British invention, the first steam fire engine was built by Braithwaite and Ericcson in 1829.

Armed with nothing but a basic hose and buckets, dedicated firefighters would tackle large fires and help save the lives of those trapped in buildings.

Far from today's advanced technology of drones and helicopters.
