THIS picture from 1989 shows Mrs Maggie Ashton, aged 81 standing at the bus stop on Whalley Road in Clayton le Moors in the rain.

Mrs Ashton, of Duke Street, hoped her petition would get a bus shelter for bus passengers, so they do not have to stand in terrible weather.

The shops lined up on the left include Clayton Electrics. The road a busy place for people getting to and from work, and passengers on busses would have to wait in rain and cold temperatures outside.

Mrs Ashton wanted to do something to get a bus shelter as she was one of the people that would have to wait in pouring rain in the past.

Whalley Road was a place where the canal workers cottages were placed, some of which still remain today. It is unclear whether Mrs Ashton's petition succeeded.
