A MAN whose universal credit had been slashed by £600 went shoplifting so he could pay the rent.
Blackburn magistrates heard Craig Southworth was caught stealing two Paco Rabanne fragrance setts worth £133.
Southworth, 45, of Exeter Street, Blackburn, pleaded guilty to stealing from Boots in Blackburn, on January 22.
He was given a conditional discharge for 18 months.
Jonathan Taylor, defending, said Southworth had been sanctioned on his universal credit after failing to attend a meeting.
"His benefits were cut by £600 and he was finding it difficult to pay the rent," said Mr Taylor.
"It was causing problems in his home life and he felt under intense pressure. He is hopeful the problem with his benefits will be sorted out in the near future."
