THE longest-serving nurse at Burnley General Hospital was given a special send off in 1980, as he celebrated his retirement.
Philip Whalley, who worked at the hospital for 34 years, went into nursing after the war, where he saw action in the field as an ambulance man.
Mr Whalley was presented with a camera from his colleagues and was treated to a buffet party.
The 62-year-old from Brierfield said he'd seen many changes over the years.
He commented: "When I first came, things were pretty grim. There were no modern facilities like lifts and telephones and often we had to care for as many as 46 patients in a small ward."
Mr Whalley said he planned to spend his retirement playing golf, and travelling.
