YOUNG people are again calling for the council to fund a skate park for them to use in a town centre.

Groups can often be seen skating outside Blackburn bus station or on the Cathedral Square because they say they have no park to congregate at.

One of the campaigners, 18-year-old Callum Mead from Accrington, is trying to get signatures for the petition for the skate park to be made in Blackburn town centre.

This is not the first time the group of skaters have asked for the council to consider the facility.

Mr Mead said: “We feel like we have been ignored by the council as they don’t see it as necessary.

"We have decided to try again because we can use the internet to try to get behind us as we feel this will not just benefit us, but it would benefit the town.

“We wouldn’t be forced to be outside the bus station or anywhere around town, and we believe it will also bring more people to the businesses.

“We don’t cause trouble, and this will also give more people my age places to go and keep them out of trouble too.”

Mr Mead added: “If they were to give us a site, we could try to get sponsors and fundraise for it.

“I know there is one in Accrington, but it’s metal, which is both dangerous for children and not suitable to skate on.

“There is a good one in Clitheroe, but that is too far from everyone, and we just want somewhere local to do what we love.”

Blackburn regeneration boss councillor Phil Riley said: “We are happy to have a conversation with them to understand where they might be looking for a site.

“There is also the question of funding which we can discuss. At the moment, it is not possible, but we will try to help them bring their plans forward.”
