A PARK’S new lottery-funded kitchen garden is set to be launched next month with a special historical dig.

The horticultural space is part of the major refurbishment of Rhyddings Park in Oswaldtwistle.

The garden will hold a launch party from 10am to 4pm, on Sunday, May 19.

The following day will see the start of a three-week archaeological dig within Rhyddings Park to celebrate the completion of the renovation.

Volunteers will be able to work alongside professionals and discover the history of the green space and town from the ground up.

Joanne Shaw, the park’s volunteer engagement officer, said: “We have lots of activities going on over the next few months.

“The kitchen garden boasts raised beds, and a stunning 80 foot glasshouse, compost bays, wildflower areas and wildlife friendly border.

“The garden will be planted in a number of different growing styles and use contrasting growing methods, which will allow visitors and workers to see which is best suited to their garden. The site will sell some of its organically-grown fruit and vegetables to visitors and to its cafe.

“Plants, seedlings and seeds will be available to purchase from the Kitchen Garden Shop.”

The garden is managed by Newground Community Interest Company, Hyndburn Council and The Friends of Rhyddings Park and funded by the Heritage Lottery.

It caters for schools, community groups, and over 50s and hosts volunteer in the park (VIP), family and community growing sessions.
