ANOTHER town centre site has been hit by fly-tipping on an industrial scale.

These photos, sent in by a concerned resident, show the mounds of discarded rubbish, which include an old sofa, tyres and old carpet, recklessly disposed of in a disused car park in Blackburn.

The site is close to the canal, off Higher Audley Street, and can be clearly seen from Prospect House business park.

The resident, who did not wish to be named said: “I’ve noticed small amounts of rubbish being dumped in this overflow car park, which used to belong to the old Tommy Balls, over a long period of time.

“But there’s now considerably more rubbish that has been tipped there in the past few days.”

The resident believes the rubbish has been dumped there because the site is not properly secured, making it easily accessible to those looking for somewhere to dispose of their unwanted household items.

Last week the Lancashire Telegraph reported how flytippers had been caught on CCTV cutting the lock to the yard of Cooper Bespoke Joinery in Lower Hollin Street, before driving two wagons onto the site and depositing 20 tonnes of rubbish on their land.

Company bosses were left with the clean-up bill.

The resident said: “I’m not sure if the people dumping this are the same people who were fly-tipping up at the joinery place in Hollin Street, but it looks very similar.

“There are gates which would allow the area to be closed off but they have remained opened. There are also large concrete bolsters next to it that would have ensured its proper closure, however these have been moved away.”

Executive member for environment at Blackburn with Darwen Council, Cllr Jim Smith said: “This isn’t council land but we will chase the owners and get them to clear it up.

“The land needs to be properly secured so that people can’t get on there and just dump their rubbish.

“If anyone knows who is doing this, please let the council know.

“We have seized vehicles in the past once we’ve found out who is bringing the rubbish and we will do it again if we have to.”
