SILVERDALE Horticultural and Gardening Society held another very successful spring show on Saturday in the Gaskell Hall. More than 250 people enjoyed the displays of pot plants, cut flowers, floral art, handicrafts, photos and well supported children’s classes.

Many of the visitors stayed on to enjoy a selection of home made cakes, coffee and teas provided by the WI ladies. Susan Rowley, the head gardener at Sizergh Castle, who judged the flower classes said: “It has been an absolute pleasure to judge the Silverdale Horticultural Show this year. The quality of the entries in all categories was extremely high and so my job was made all the more difficult!"

There were 478 exhibits and 57 adults put in entries - nearly twice as many as last year - and 92 children also got involved.

Society president John Eden presented the following awards: Alfred Roberts Trophy, Jean Fletcher; Sleigh Challenge Cup, Viv Jones; Walter Taylor Primary School Trophy, Hamish Hubbard; Mrs Chapman Cup, Emily Barlow; Frances Stewart Trophy, Alex Carroll; The Silverdale Hotel Shield, Tilly Martin; £5 voucher, Nancy Bond; £5 voucher, Francis Garne; £5 voucher, Nancy Bond; £5 book token, Tilly Martin; Dr Douglas Young Prize, Betty Duckett; Frank Hampson Cup, Anne Turnbull.
