SHOPS are now starting to stop selling glitter to reduce plastic waste.

Aldi are pledging to ban plastic glitter by the end of 2020 and replace it with a biodegradable version.

With stores in Blackburn, Great Harwood, Accrington, Chorley, Rawtenstall, Burnley and Colne, the store will implement the change in all of its stores.

Products including greetings cards, wrapping paper, seasonal decorations and art and craft supplies will be replaced or glitter taken out of them.

Fritz Walleczek, Managing Director of Corporate Responsibility at Aldi UK and Ireland: “We want to be sure our customers can enjoy key events without compromising on sustainability, which is why we’ve promised to remove all non-biodegradable glitter from all of our products by 2020.”

This is the latest plastic reduction step from Aldi, as it has already made significant strides to cutting plastic since committing to using only recyclable, reusable or compostable packaging on its own products by 2022, and on all products by 2025.

Aldi are not the only store that will ban glitter, stores such as Sainsburys, Next, and Marks & Spencer (M&S) have all committed to reduce their use of plastic glitter.

Glitter is made up of tiny plastic pieces which eventually end up in the water, where it cannot easily break down.

Most fish and other sea animals end up swallowing the tiny pieces.
