WORKERS have called for double yellow lines to be introduced on a road running through business parks due to a ‘dangerous’ parking problem.

Jessica Taylor and Ray Massey of Glenfield Park Business Centre, in Blackburn, have urged the council to bring in the traffic measures after dozens of cars have been parking on Blakewater Road.

The workers said the excessive parking leads to the pavements being blocked and traffic struggling to pull out of the business parks.

Ms Taylor said the problem has been on-going for about a year.

She said: “During rush hour manoeuvring out of the business parks becomes really hard because you can’t see what’s coming.

“The cars park on the corners right up to the park gates.

“There’s been instances of people almost crashing because you can’t see up the road.

“It becomes really dangerous in the winter because the lighting isn’t great and when it goes dark early its almost impossible to see.

“The lorries struggle to get in and out because there’s no room to manoeuvre.”

The industrial area is home to several business parks and has links to the Whitebirk roundabout near junction six of the M65.

Ray Massey, who also works at the site, said: “There are not any parking restrictions so cars are allowed to park down here. But there are bus stops up the road and they get blocked off all the time because of the cars.”

According to the Department for Transport, parking on the pavement can obstruct and seriously inconvenience pedestrians, people in wheelchairs or with visual impairments and people with prams or pushchairs.

Parking on the pavement is not illegal however a fine can be given in some instances.

Ms Taylor added: “We need double yellow lines on this road to stop the cars parking there.

“We don’t know where the cars are coming from.”

Martin Eden, director of environment and operations at Blackburn with Darwen Council, said: “In response to concerns, the council is in the process of putting a scheme in place for Blakewater Road which will hopefully resolve the issues.

“The legal process is under way and it is anticipated that this could be could be implemented in the summer subject to no objections being received.”
