SIX of a council's new gritters have been given wintry names to go with the existing 'Holly Chilloughby' - named after the This Morning TV show host.

The titles were the winners of a social media competition run by Lancashire County Council after it added seven new vehicles to its 45-strong fleet of road clearing vehicles.

It has been running ‘Name the gritter’ competitions since 2011.

Earlier this year Holly Willoughby was upset when her co-host Philp Scholfield revealed he had a gritter namesake 'Phillip Snowfield'.

The winning names for the new wagons are 'Penelope Gritstop', 'Cool Grittania', 'Albert Ice-stein', 'Freddie Frostoff', 'Grittersaurus' and 'Basil Salty'.

The seven new gritters will be on duty when snow and ice strikes next winter.

A spokesman for Lancashire County Council said: “We know people really value the difficult job our gritter drivers do, often in the early hours and in icy conditions, to make sure the main routes are safer for the rest of us.

“The gritting vehicles are crucial to this task, and we received hundreds of suggestions for naming the new gritters which became part of our fleet this winter.

“Keeping Lancashire moving is a serious business, and one of our biggest priorities when severe weather strikes. We’re grateful to everyone who entered for the new names which should raise a smile when people see a gritter going by.”
