A CLITHEROE landlord was assaulted as he tried to sort out trouble in his pub involving rival factions from Burnley and Blackpool.

Blackburn magistrates heard Jonathan James Sawley punched Stephen Cuncar as he escorted a man out of the Social Club on Wellgate.

And the court was told the offence was committed while Sawley was on prison licence for another offence of violence.

Sawley, 31, of Thames Avenue, Burnley, pleaded guilty to assault and using threatening behaviour. He was jailed for 10 weeks and ordered to pay £100 compensation to Mr Cuncar.

Parveen Akhtar, prosecuting, said Sawley was with two other men and one of them had punched someone knocking him to the ground. The landlord, Mr Cuncar was taking him out of the pub when Sawley punched him.

"Outside the club there was further trouble and the defendant appeared to be trying to fight with other people," said Miss Akhtar.

Dylan Bradshaw, defending, said Sawley and his friends became involved with people on a ride out from a club in Blackpool.

"My client and his friends were heavily outnumbered and after words were exchanged a stool was thrown by one of the group from Blackpool," said Mr Bradshaw. "He saw his friend being detained and intervened. After that he was manhandled from the club and the argument continued outside."
