WORK to demolish two buildings at Rhyddings Business and Enterprise School has been announced.

The East and West block buildings at the Oswaldtwistle school were closed last October after a problem was found with the building frames.

The issue was noticed during some ongoing planned maintenance work.

At the time, some pupils were relocated to Hameldon Community College in Burnley for a short period while safety work took place.

After a thorough assessment it has been decided the best course of action will be to demolish the two buildings, with work due to commence in June.

During the course of this work Rhyddings pupils and staff will re-locate and use the vacant Hameldon school site again.

To facilitate this a number of school closures will be necessary to allow resources and equipment to be moved to Hameldon.

Arrangements will also be made in due course in regards to transportation for pupils to Hameldon, which will be provided by LCC.

Year 11 pupils will not be affected as their exams will take place before the re-location. Work on the Rhyddings site is expected to continue across the school summer holidays.

The county council is working with the governors at both schools to ensure that appropriate arrangements are in place.

Headteacher Andrew Williams said: "The safety of our pupils, staff and visitors is paramount, which is why we must relocate to the Hameldon site while this work takes place."

"This is a significant undertaking and will require much preparation and planning but together with Lancashire County Council we will do our utmost to minimise the impact and provide as much continuity as is possible.

"Many of our pupils experienced the successful relocation to Hameldon last year when the issue with the buildings was first discovered so will be familiar with how smooth the process was.

"Hameldon is a super facility and when we take up guest residence in June all Hameldon pupils will have left and we will operate the school site purely as Rhyddings."
