AN EDUCATION committee chairman spoke out against staffing concerns at the newly formed Witton Park Secondary School.

Councillor Alexander Carus called for more faith in the Witton Park School, with over 1,100 students at the new establishment. But. the school was hit by 12 resignations, one of those being the headmistress, Miss Jessie Mulholland.

Councillor Carus, said: "We must remember that it is still in its infancy and has not yet had a chance to prove itself, but it will do so. I was surprised and not a little disturbed to hear that a few senior girls and a teacher had complained about the school and described the conditions as 'terrible.'

"At the moment 12 members of staff have resigned, which does not seem very alarming out of a staff of 59 full-time and 15 part-time teachers.

"Some of these resignations are due to retirements , some are due to illness, some to the desire to obtain a post nearer home and several seeking promotion to other secondary schools in the borough."

The school was transitioning with the merging of two separate schools, and this had caused some disturbance to the staff working there.
