A new £5.4million high school set to open in September is bringing a jobs boost to an East Lancashire town.

The Heights Burnley, an Alternative Provision Free School for pupils aged five to sixteen, sits on the former Ridgewood School site which was wrecked by a fire five years ago.

And as well as providing high quality vocational education for pupils who have found it difficult to achieve in mainstream settings, the school is looking for a wide range of employees, including teachers, teaching assistants, catering, cleaning, minibus drivers and office staff.

As part of an agreement made with The Lancashire Skills and Employment Hub, the school, which is falls under the Education Partnership Trust (EPT) is supporting a pledge to provide local jobs to local people.

Chief executive of the EPT, Sharon Roscoe, said: "The Heights Burnley is an example of how partnership working can make a real difference. The school will fill a gap in local provision and meet the needs of young people in our borough."

The Heights Burnley, located off Burleigh Street, will join the EPT portfolio of schools which includes The Heights Blackburn, Coal Clough Academy Burnley, Eden School and Pleckgate High School, which was awarded outstanding in a recent Ofsted inspection.

Leader of Burnley Council, Cllr Mark Townsend, said: "I am looking forward to this school opening and supporting education in Burnley in general."

There are a number of vacancies still unfilled with application closing dates of Friday April 5.
