A TEENAGER allegedly carrying a knife has been arrested following a street brawl involving more than 20 people, police say.

Police were called to the fight on New Chapel Street, Mill Hill, shortly after 4.30pm today.

The brawl, reported to include between 20 and 30 people, quickly dispersed following the arrival of officers. It was also reported that some people were seen to be carrying weapons.

Paramedics also attended and one man was found with facial injuries. He was taken to hospital for treatment where he remains in a stable condition.

An 18-year-old man, from Blackburn, has been arrested on suspicion of affray and possession of a knife. He is currently in police custody.

Inspector Jon Cisco, of Blackburn Police, said there will be heavier police presence in the area following the incident.

Lancashire Telegraph:

Mill Hill resident Thomas Greenwood, 30, who works on New Chapel Street, said: “I saw a large group of people at around 5.30pm but had no idea what was going as I was just getting into work.

“I’m quite shocked to find out this is what happened. Mill Hill has a bad reputation but when you live here it’s not as bad as people say it is so it’s a shame when incidents like this take place.”

Ward councillor Damian Talbot described the incident as ‘disturbing’ and said: “I just hope that any culprits are dealt with and appropriate action is taken.”

A 46-year-old woman, who also works on New Chapel Street, said: “I saw a police car outside and a cordon when I came to work at around 4.40pm.

“It’s not a safe area and something is always happening. It can be very scary sometimes and I would like to see more police present, particularly at night time.”

Inspector Cisco added: “We understand the concern that this will have caused to people in the local area. We believe this was a targeted incident and would like to reassure people that it has now come to a close.

“We are taking this very seriously and there will be a heavier police presence in the area while our enquiries continue.

“If you were in the area around the time and have any information which could assist us, please contact us on 101 quoting log number 981 of 21 March.”
